As pipes are usually hidden from view, it is not always easy to know when your home plumbing system has sprung a leak. However, it is very important to find leaks early to limit the amount of water damage that results. Look out for these five signs of a leak and call an emergency plumber as soon as you locate the source of the water.

1. Brown Stains

Water leaking through walls, ceilings or cupboards causes brown stains to appear. If you spot brown stains appearing in your home, feel the surface to see if it is damp. Next, try to locate the source of the leak. Note that water leaking through the ceiling or wall might indicate a leak in the neighbouring house or apartment, in which case you will need to notify your neighbours. If you find a leak in your own home, shut off the water and call a plumber right away.

2. Mould

If a leak remains unattended, some of the surfaces in your home can become so saturated with water that they attract the growth of mould. You can get rid of the mould by scrubbing the surface with a solution of bleach in water, but it is sure to return if you don't fix the leak that has caused the damp in the first place.

3. Unpleasant Smell

Homes that are affected by leaking pipes typically smell quite bad. Water soaking into walls and floors causes the growth of microorganisms that produce unpleasant odours. If you notice that your home smells like a blocked drain, check it thoroughly for signs of a leaking pipe.

4. Excessive Water Usage

Hopefully, you will notice the signs of a plumbing leak long before it has a significant impact on your water bills. However, it's always a good idea to pay attention to your usage of water as stated on your bill. If this figure is higher than you expect, a leak is likely. Search your home for other signs of a leak and then call a plumber to resolve the problem for you.

5. Discoloured Water

Sometimes, cracks in water pipes can allow rust, soil or sediment to enter your drinking water supply. If you notice discolouration, first check with your neighbours to see if they have the same problem. If only your home is affected, it is likely that a pipe has cracked open somewhere in your property. Shut off the water and contact a plumber for help.
