I just update AirTalkr to AIR 1.0. From the features and UI perspective, there is not much changes except now it is compartible with AIR 1.0 and by just doing that, it rooted some bugs away.

You can download it here:

Cheers to AIR.

To complement the new search user feature for AirTalkr, I have added a server side component to dispatch email to you whenever someone sends you an offline message. This way, you will never miss a message. To try out AirTalkr user search, login into AirTalkr and search. If you message your friend and they are offline, they will receive an email alert. Its pretty simple stuff like GTalk, but I think that will help a bit.

Upcoming for Airtalkr will be the following, in list of priorities (the top ones will be complete first)
1) HTTP-Binding. Done on client side but server side got problem as my server also runs IIS and it takes up the port 80. The default port for openfire http-binding runs on port 8080 and I am looking at Tomcat’s IIS_Redirct.dll and AJK implementation of Jetty to do the forwarding. But I am not a Java guy and these things are mind-bogging for me.
So far, the guys at JIVE software has been helping me out with this issues. Kudos to the Jive developers! My last resort will be to get another brand new server for AirTalkr.

1) Tagging of users (for example, I can tag myself with ‘geek, flash, flex’)
2) Search of users, base on tag and gender
3) Better AirCard with more information
4) Box.net integration

From 2nd October to 8th October, I will be going for vacation. Most probably I will try to get HTTP-binding and tagging features released with AIR Beta 2, which will boost with features like system tray and taskbar notification.

Keep AirTalking!

AirTalkr has reach a user base of 3600 users in around 8 days since it got reported by Mashable after AIR Derby and I will like to thanks all the blogger and news website that is constantly reporting it. It is certainly something that I did not expect! As mentioned earlier, AirTalkr is coded for AIR Derby, and the Web version is to demonstrate how fast you can port a Desktop App to Web when using Flex and AS3. So whats coming up next?

Today, I spend a while putting up a small update so that:
1) Users can register over port 80 (used to be default port 9090),making it more friendly
2) You will hear an alert whenever you receive a messenge

In the next few months, I will continue to build and stablizing it so that, in particular:
1) Testing and porting it with the newest AIR builds (Beta 2), fixing of scary popup errors, improving performance. Thanks Adobe for inviting me into the pre-release program!
2) AirTalkr User Search, which I feel it is not necessary at first because there is no userbase. Now, it is more possible with a slightly larger userbase. Which is enabled now.

OverView

User Search Toggle

Initially I enabled the search result such that you can message the user directly if he is on MSN, etc, on the network itself. However, I removed it due to privacy and spamming issues. =)

3) Modifying of own’s AirCard - In progress, will be up over the weekend
4) Switching of Themes, which can be done so easily (in terms of code), yet so hard (in terms of graphics, me no designer, it takes me 2 full day to do 1 theme). PS: If someone wants to help me create a theme for AirTalkr, contact me!
5) Box.net integration. Quick code port from Icicle. Box.net provides you with free storage and most importantly, it is flash-friendly. Integration with Box.net allows users a free 5 gig webspace to store their musics, and stuff, and to share files with their friends.
6) Upcoming.org integration. I hope I can integrate this. Open up AirTalkr and see the latest Events in town, and then you can ask your friends (which will be in your IM of course) whether they want to go with you.

As of now, AirTalkr will continue to move in three area.

1) More Integration with Social Networking Sites

2) More Stability, as AIR progress

3) Better Chatting Functionality

The priority now will be stability, with things like System Tray supports, which will most probably comes in when AIR Beta 2 is publicly release, as well as improve in performance.
For Chinese users (which I think consist of quite a number), I am looking at QQ protocol now. But I am pretty rusty to Java and trying to get the gateway working with the existing one is quite a task for me. Anyone reading this blog is a Java expert perhaps can help me out =D

I have been getting quite a number of feedbacks/feature request from many users and I do my best to reply all of them. If I haven reply your email, give me a few days and I am sure will get to you.

As for AIR Derby, since I did not receive anything, I am prepared for the worst. Its a good experience anyway! ;)

I spend 30 mins today porting AirTalkr from AIR to pure Flex. Then redirect all the urlrequest links through a proxy (since most site I access , except twitter and flickr, are not ‘flash-friendly’ ), and there you got it, an Instant Messenger on the Web build with Flex.

Since its on the web, I add 1 small feature in Flickr where you can choose any photo as your background image.

I do that because a lot of friends tell me they are lazy to install AIR runtime or are ‘uncomfortable in installing a Beta product’. So ya, a little tiny messenger that share the same code base with AirTalkr desktop. It also demonstrate how rapid you can turn a desktop app into a web app with AIR and Flex =)

Now heres the link: http://airtalkr.com/im

Enjoy =)

Previously, I believe those who run AirTalkr on Mac will get an memory allocation error. This is due to me using the following code on application runs:

1
2
this.stage.window.width = NativeWindowCapabilities.windowMaxSize.x
this.stage.window.height = NativeWindowCapabilities.windowMaxSize.y

It works on windows, but its make the application end up in what seems like an infinite loop on a Mac machine. I have solve this bug and hope that those who are using Mac and faced this problem can give it a second chance and take a look at it again.

Finally got this bug fixed with the help of Alvin and Campbell Anderson. Both of which has been bugged by me numerous times to help me test the application.

For those who cannot see the application previously, you should be able to see it now. Got to download and install it though, since those who face this problem cannot click on the ‘update’ button. Thanks guys!

AirTalkr v0.2 is finally out after a long wait from v0.1.9. We got a new logo this time thanks to Flashmech and Darakusan. Both of them helped me to design logos and UI suggestions . The reason for the wait is due to numerous request to change the UI here and there. My focus next will be to increase usability in Flickr and YouTube modules which I have left untouched to solve the main IM bugs and improvements.

2 most significant bug fixes are
1) multiple chat window opened for single user
2) AirTalkr crash when receive a message for the first time

and a few improvment here and there, especially support for resizing of the main IM, and chat History viewing

airchatv212.jpg

I still got a couple of UI to skin (the ugly scrollbar is top of my list).

Note that I am not embedding text here as I want to support CJK (chinese jap korean) characters and minimizing the file size to 1mb.

Once again, keep the feedback coming!

Aug 17

I have released a v0.1.9 of AirTalkr with the following enhancement. The main reason for this release is to fixed the YouTube bug which break the entire YouTube functionality.

New Features:
Chat History is now available
You can save Flickr photos directly
You can navigate to Flickr photo URL directly

Fixes:
YouTube video not showing when click

From now onwards I will be dealing with bug fixes for a while, after which I will enhance AirTalkr with more functionality, but that will depends on the current progress and feedbacks from you guys. So..keep your feedbacks coming! [Email me at shinchi[at]gmail.com ]
